Day in Nantucket

Yesterday we took a day trip to Nantucket, a small island just south of Hyannis (a town in the middle of The Cape). We had heard a lot about Nantucket and thus, decided to give it a shot. Plus the forecast was good and its about 15 degrees cooler there than in Boston!

So - Lisa booked us a round-trip ferry ticket leaving at 8:00am and returning 8:30pm. That meant we had to wake up ~5:00am and leave ~5:45am to get to Hyannis on time for departure :-0. We also decided to head back at the end of the day because Nantucket is notoriously expensive during the summer. We checked on some hotels online and believe it or not, the cheapest rooms are somewhere in the neighborhood of $350 per night! And the name of the hotel included the word "Coffin." No thanks...

As we boarded the ferry, the first thing we noticed was that everyone happened to be wearing plaid, khakis, pink, or a combination thereof. It also suddenly became apparent that the people on the ferry belonged to a certain economic strata, evidenced by the number of Rolexes we saw (some models we have never seen before)! Anyhow, we arrived in Nantucket harbor via fast ferry and the ride was quite smooth. Then we climbed on our bikes and headed out to the East side of the island. One really nice thing about Nantucket is that it is full of nice, well-marked and smooth bike routes. The island is only about 15 miles by 3.5 miles, so its pretty easy to get around on a bike. Other options include taking your car, which costs ~$400 or riding the Nantucket shuttle.

After brunch, walking down a road with some gargantuan homes, seeing a lighthouse, and changing a flat, we rode back into town and then crossed over to Madaket, the other end of the island. By the end of the day, and were absolutely exhausted!

Here is a funny quote we heard while eavesdropping during the day (we are not exaggerating):

"I had a friend that moved down to Houston. Its really like the Wild Wild West down there."
--Guy wearing all white with girl wearing all white, both carrying a tennis racquet over the right shoulder
